With Melbourne as its state capital, and several superb offshore excursions such as Phillip Island and Mornington Peninsula, Victoria features a blend of modernity and intrinsic beauty with a huge array of sports, cultural and nature attractions. Sitting on the Yarra River, Melbourne is many people’s top choice when visiting Australia, and much of Victoria’s tourist attracts are available as excursions from the city, which acts as a focal point for the state. Victoria hosts the Australian Open Tennis Championships in January, the Australian Grand Prix and the International Comedy and Flower shows in March, as well as the International Arts Festival in October and the Melbourne Cup in November. Whilst it’s never a bad time to visit Victoria, the winter rainy season running from June to August where there are less outdoor events scheduled.
