Los Angeles boasts a pleasant subtropical year-round climate which is protected from extremes of temperature and humidity by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains. Breezes from the Pacific Ocean also influence Los Angeles’s climate keeping the city cooler in summer and warmer in winter than those areas further inland. Summer daytime temperatures average 85 °F (29 °C) whilst winter daytime temperatures average 70 °F (21 °C). Rain occurs mainly in the winter and spring months. Smog often gathers in low-lying coastal areas and sometimes the hot, dusty Santa Ana winds blow in strongly from the surrounding mountains.
