Bangkok is one of the most enigmatic and exciting cities in the world. It combines
flavours of the old ‘East’ like the floating markets and old temples, with icons
of westernisation such as the luxurious shopping malls, expressway flyovers, and
sophisticated bars and restaurants.
Bangkok is a typical primate city, having dominated Thailand’s urban hierarchy and
its political, commercial and cultural life since the 18th Century. There are so
many reasons to go and visit Bangkok beginning with the eclectic mix of East meets
West, the fantastic cuisine, warm hospitality of the people, and the captivating
cultural sights and amazing shopping.
The Grand Palace is an extravagant sight built within a walled complex, which as
you enter reveals an array of glittering temples complete with gold stupas and 20
ft demons. A great way to see the city is to take a tuk tuk through the busy streets
or a long-tail boat along the city canals past the houses on stilts and orchid gardens.
If you happen to be in Bangkok on a weekend, the Chatuchak Market is unmissable.
The ramshackle collection of over 300 stalls houses an assortment of Thai furniture
and antiques, food, Burmese handicrafts, carpets, porcelain, amulets, Thai silks,
clothes and more. There is certainly no shortage of things to do and see in Bangkok
and as such it is widely regarded as one of Asia’s most interesting and exciting
cities.
