As the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has much to offer anyone looking
for an exciting city break. It is Malaysia’s largest city with over 1,000,000 inhabitants
of Malay, Chinese and Indian origin. Due to this concoction of communities present
in the city, Kuala Lumpur has an enormous diversity of customs, religious beliefs,
languages, dress, architecture and fantastic cuisine. The city also boasts an amazing
array of cultural and historical relics left over from a colourful past, which contrast
with the current explosion of modern buildings as part of Malaysia’s drive for development.
The city of Kuala Lumpur is best explored by district, each of which possesses its
own character. The Golden Triangle is Kuala Lumpur’s premier business, shopping
and entertainment district built on the back of Malaysia’s petroleum industry. Aside
from the glittering shopping malls and luxury hotels, you can find the stunning
Petronas Towers here. Their twin towers are classed as one of the world’s tallest
buildings at 452 metres and are the nation’s icon of pride.
The Lake Gardens area is contrastingly serene and tranquil, made up of public parks
with tropical flora and fauna, butterfly gardens, a bird park and orchid gardens.
The colonial core area is a district rich in cultural history containing Merdeka
Square (or Independence Square), the heart of Kuala Lumpur where national celebrations
and marches take place. The square is surrounded by buildings of historic importance
including Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Mosque. Built in 1907, this mosque
is an outstanding example of Islamic architecture. For a bargain, visit one of the
cities many markets, particularly the Chow Kit night market which is full of painters
and sculptors and is also great for sampling local cuisine.
A city break to Kuala Lumpur, in addition to being an atmospheric, charming city,
is an excellent way to witness to the fast-paced ‘modern Malaysia’.
