Sri Lanka Weather Guide

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, however Sri Lanka is subject to two monsoons. During May through August the southwest monsoon brings rain to the southern, western and central regions, and from October through to January, the northeast monsoon brings rain to the north and east of the island. Temperatures in the coastal regions average 27°C year round but they rapidly fall with altitude and in the hill country. The highest temperatures are from March through June, while November to January is usually the coolest time of the year. Rainfall is heaviest in the south, southwest and central highlands; the northern and northcentral regions are very dry. The best time to visit the west, south coast and hill country is between December and March. May to September is best on the east coast. The sea temperature remains constant throughout the year at a very comfortable 27 °C and extreme caution is advised when swimming due to the strong rip tides and currents.
