Overview
The 60 or so islands of Cambodia all reside within the Gulf of Thailand and are easily reachable from Sihanoukville, Kep and Koh Kong. While some islands don’t offer the modern luxuries of more developed areas, what they do provide is quiet, pristine beaches and a laidback vibe that is hard to beat. For nature, head to Koh Thmei inside Ream National Park, home to monkeys, lizards and over 100 different species of birds. Divers will find paradise in the waters off Koh Tang, about five hours from the mainland. This uninhabited gem offers clear waters, coral reefs and undisturbed marine life. With only five bungalows, similarly-named Koh Totang is a great place to just get away from it all; showers use saved rainwater and produce is grown in the garden, while time is spent relaxing in a hammock and admiring the views. However, if luxury resorts are what you’re after, then you won’t be disappointed either. The two private islands of Song Saa translate as ‘sweethearts’ in Khmer, and its not hard to see how they got their name. Song Saa Private Island is an ethical five-star resort created with sustainability in mind. It offers a beautiful private beach, luxury wooden villas, tranquil spa sanctuaries and a preserved coral reef.
When To Visit
The nearest islands to Cambodia mainland are Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem, sitting just off Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville has a tropical climate which is dictated by monsoon winds and its coastal location. While the summer months see heavy rains and winds, the winter months bring light winds, sun and almost no precipitation. The high season is from November to March with peak months being December and January when rooms sell fast. By the time June comes, the rain soon follows, but your likely to grab a bargain if travelling at this time. Average temperatures are high throughout the year and peak in April or May when they can top 35°C.

Passport & Visas
