Shima Overview

Shima

A peninsula in the Mie Prefecture, within the Kansai region on Japan’s main island of Honsh, Shima is known for its natural beauty and cultural importance. The peninsula was designated as Ise-Shima National Park and is home to Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrines, the Ise Shrines, consisting of Geku (the outer shrine) and Naiku (the inner shrine). Naiku is said to have been established in the 3rd century and Geku in the 5th century. A number of bays grace the coastline and include Matoya Bay, known for its oysters, and Ago Bay, often referred to as the Bay of Pearls.
