Overview

As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a centre for the arts and boasts three of the most impressive galleries in the world. The city enjoys a wealth of leading museums, exquisite Baroque architecture, ornate cathedrals, and idyllically manicured parks. A luxury holiday in Madrid offers a chance to stay in exclusive hotels with relaxing spa facilities and world-class dining.

Divided into a series of distinctive districts, Madrid is a comfortable place to wander, and you're never far from a beautiful sight. Centro, the central district of Madrid, is where you'll find the largest concentration of sights and attractions. Take time to wander the main square, Plaza Mayor, sit back with a glass of wine and watch the people of Madrid pass by.

Visit one of the many opulent churches and cathedrals in the area, like the Almudena Cathedral and be sure to take time out in Buen Retiro Park, a relaxing place perfect for slow walks. Also in Madrid’s centre, The Golden Triangle of Art is home to Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. These three museums are renowned for their collection of artistic masterpieces by European masters like Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez or Guernica by Pablo Picasso.

For high-end designer shopping, head southeast to Gran Via. This ornate street never sleeps. It's a lively place with some of the most lavish buildings housing exclusive stores. In nearby El Rastro, the streets flow with regional delicacies, antiques and souvenirs at one of Spain's oldest and largest flea markets. This market takes place every Sunday.

When To Visit

With lots of prestigious art galleries, museums and attractions, luxury holidays in Madrid are enjoyable at any time of the year. If you like warmer weather, visit the city in the summer when temperatures peak above 30 degrees Celsius.

If you prefer a colder climate, Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit the city. In spring, occasional rains colour Madrid's parks with wildflower while in Autumn, the trees create a romantic setting of red and orange hues. You'll find winter is terrific for exploring at your own pace.

Food & Drink

Begin your day with an international breakfast buffet at your hotel and spend your evening sampling foods from around the world. Try Cantonese dim sum or traditional Spanish dishes like paella. Spanish tapas are also great for socialising with friends or loved ones.

Pair your meal with wine from local Spanish vineyards. Red wine vintages like Roja or tempranillo are popular options or try sangria, a fruity cocktail with a red wine base. End your day by toasting your trip with a glass of cava, a world-renowned sparkling wine.

Passport & Visas

As with any holiday, it's a good idea to carry some identification with you at all times and to keep a photocopy of your passport. British passport holders don't need a visa to enter Spain. Visit GOV.UK for more advice on passports, visas and travel.
