Overview

Tobago is one half of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and it is the smaller island of the two, It is known or its beautiful mountains surrounding the island, its long stretches of yellow sandy beaches and also because of its tropical rainforest housing many species of wildlife. Historically the island was first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498 and over the years many nations have tried to take possession including the Dutch, English, French and Spanish. As it continued to change hands it had a number of phases of successful sugar plantation although a severe hurricane inn1847 but a stop to this and the islander's had to turn to other crops such as limes, cocoa and coconuts t=and export them to Trinidad. It gained independence from the British Empire in 1962 and became a republic in 1976. On the west coast, you will find Pigeon Point which features a thatched roof pier and a long stretch of beach. For scuba diving, one of the best areas is Buccoo Reef with its sea gardens filled with coral and all kinds of marine life and is also fantastic for snorkelling, fishing and swimming. Watch out for the sunken car ferry which is now used as an artificial reef. To the eastern side of the island there is the fishing village of Charlotteville offering triple-tiered waterfalls and on the tiny offshore island of Little Tobago is a bird sanctuary which is well worth a visit. The capital, Scarborough lies on the south coast of the area and it is surrounded by indigenous trees and shrubs in Scarborough Botanical Gardens. Looking over the city on a hill lies the 18th century Fort King George and within it is the Tobago Museum housing local art and artefacts. Crown Point is in the southwest of Tobago and this is where the Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson International Airport which is close to both Buccoo Reef and Pigeon Point. Another place of interest is Castara which is a seaside village on the leeward coast of Tobago and besides tourism it is known for its fishing and agriculture. It has some beautiful beaches including Englishman’s Bay, Castara Beach, Parlatuvier Bay offering swimming, boating and fishing and Bloody Bay.

When To Visit

Scarborough has a tropical climate, with plenty of rain. March–April is usually slightly drier. Carnival in February - March sees the streets closed for parades. Tobago Jazz Experience in April mixes jazz and Tobago’s traditional music in venues across the island. During July-August there is The Great Fete, a multiday beach party, and a Carib Great Race, a powerboat race from Trinidad to Tobago. The Tobago Heritage Festival during the summer helps preserve Tobago’s cultural traditions.
