‘Luxury Lodge at the Crater’s Edge’
The Ngorongoro Crater is an extensive highland area with a dramatic 600m-deep crater. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera shelters a magnificent array of wildlife; giant tusked elephant wander the forest, black-maned lion prowl the grasslands, pink flamingo gather at the soda lakes and endangered black rhino are protected within its rim. A number of activities carried out by the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge allow you to explore this wildlife haven. Depart on an enthralling game drive or opt to walk on scenic hiking routes. Further out, explore the archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge and the visually spectacular shifting sands. Back at the lodge, enjoy the traditional drumming performances and singing of Maasai warriors as you sip a sundowner cocktail. The lodge comprises thirty stilted mud and thatch suites across three separate and intimate camps, with each camp featuring their own guest sitting area, dining area and viewing deck. Dining takes place in a grand dining room, which can also be transformed into an elegant rose petal banquet.
In Our Opinion‘Overlooking spectacular crater views from almost every area of the lodge, this baroque-style retreat provides unique encounters and experiences for each day of your stay.’
The family suite consists of two inter-leading suites. Each suite features a bedroom, en-suite bathroom and sitting area; all with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the crater. Personal butler service adds to the luxury.
Stilted mud and thatch suites are appointed with graceful antiques, grand chandeliers and African art elements. The bedroom, en-suite bathroom and sitting area all feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the crater below. The en-suite bathroom features a separate shower and chandelier-lit bathtub. Personal butler service will cater for your every need, from stoking your fireplace to bringing you tea in bed.
Guests at the lodge can take part in game drives, visits to Olduvai Gorge and the shifting sands, private sundowners on the rim, Empakaai Crater hikes, Lake Eyasi walks, Crater view walks and view traditional Maasai performances.
Due to the lodge being situated on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, game drives take a significant time to reach the crater’s floor and return to the lodge – so only one game drive is usually carried out per day, be it in the morning or afternoon. You descend into the crater through a lush highland forest with magnificent birdlife among the various tree species. Once on the floor you will discover a large variety of grazing herbivores and predators, as well as huge flocks of pink flamingo around the shores of the shallow Lake Magadi depending on the time of year, whilst the surrounding swamp is inhabited by hippo. You are likely to encounter a large number of other vehicles during the high season but during the rainy season you can enjoy a more private game drive. Safari vehicles are closed, with glass windows and a pop-up roof.
