'Incredible Private Estates, Stunning Island Retreat'
Pangkor Laut Estates represent Southeast Asia's past gentry, featuring eight replicas of the old world's interpretation of Paradise. The beachfront estates have a self-sustaining, giant, natural marine aquarium at their doorstep in the form of the cove's waters whilst in the rainforest, the hilltop estates are magnificent examples of 5-star living. Privacy is paramount.
In Our Opinion
'Frequented by celebrities and stars of the stage and screen, these exclusive estates are a jewel of the Far East; capped by an impeccable location they offer the absolute pinnacle of deluxe resort experience'
The dense rainforest canopy forms the genius loci of Estate Eight where the sky appears green instead of blue due to the exceptionally luxuriant leafy canopy. This rainforest canopy utilises the tropical sun so effectively that the entire acreage seems to be under a colossal dome of living breathing leaves, held up by ever growing pillars of ancient trees.
At first sight, it is almost easy to imagine that the fun-loving satyrs and majestic centaurs of folklore live among the dense rainforest trees. Here is a paradise of nature's own doing; where hornbills frequently ply the air and colourful carp playfully chase each other in the pond.
Two layouts were designed for the bungalow bedrooms – in the tower design, guests can sit within the embrace of double volume bay windows to enjoy the sunlight, while another layout sports a tree shaded verandah, perfect for a morning cup of tea. Perched on the edge of a hillside, each bungalow bedroom has a private balcony and deck facing the sea. The dining pavilion offers the most beautiful sunset views, while the living and sitting pavilions overlook a free-form infinity pool whose contours are inspired by the shape of a lotus flower. The estate features:
With 270-degree panoramas of the rainforest and the sea, the stunning vistas form the genius loci of Estate Five where the best view of the Straits of Malacca is found and the tops of trees draw level with the horizon where sea meets sky.
Estate Five rests at the eastern tip of the semi-circle of hilltop estates, neatly tucked into the hillside and surrounded by verdant vegetation. The entrance leads to a sandstone pathway that meanders past gardens of flowering shrubs. Round a corner and, like a suddenly sprung surprise, the reason that this estate is considered the prettiest of all bursts upon the senses: it is the only estate with a wide wooden deck strategically placed to offer a sweeping view of sea over the canopy of rainforest trees.
The airy deck is a favourite with guests who enjoy parties and barbecues out in the open. As a natural gathering point, the centrally located deck is the perfect place for whiling away the wee hours of the night under a velvety indigo sky, with the lights of Pangkor Island in the distance. The estate features:
The genius loci of Estate Four is its close proximity to the sea. Characterised by its living pavilion, built directly over the waves, gives one the impression of walking on water during high tide. This estate facilitates a special union with the sea, as the waves ripple beneath the living pavilion and touch the sandstone walls of its infinity pool.
With its multi-levelled layout and a maze of natural granite rubble walls due to its natural terrain, an enhanced sense of privacy without the feeling of being enclosed is achieved. There is a constant sense of discovery when exploring the leafy meandering pathways, surrounded by enormous cliffs, natural vertical gardens, unusual ferns and huge trees. A stunning free-form infinity pool that optically spills over into the sea, offer commanding views of beach and ocean or choose to nap in the cosy, bamboo screened resting pavilion nearby.
Affectionately referred to as the honeymoon estate by newlyweds for its romantic ambience, it is also much loved by families. The estate features:
An enormous natural rock garden estimated to be 200-million years old dictate this estate's genius loci. These monoliths are a minute segment of the 3,500-kilometre chain of granitic rock stretching from Yunnan in south China to the Bangka and Belitung islands in Indonesia.
Estate Nine enjoys a magnificent elevation and spectacular views - its living and dining pavilions face the ocean and salty sea breezes, while the balconies of its bungalow bedrooms overlook the rainforest. Perched on a natural high point overlooking the pool and viewing deck, is the hot spa pavilion. Unlike the other private bath pavilions that have exclusive access from bungalow bedrooms, this hot spa is designed to be a communal bath, in the tradition of Japanese onsen. The design and surroundings of this hot spa harness the power of nature to heal mind and body, and also to strengthen ties between family and friends. The estate features:
Estate One forms the beginning of the Pangkor Laut Estates and was the first estate to be developed. The genius loci for Estate One lie in the giant bedrock of granite as a natural foundation. Left undisturbed, it gained new life by forming the firm foundation on which the breezily open living pavilion is built.
Situated at one horn of Marina Bay's crescent-shaped shore, this estate enjoys a secluded bay and a panoramic view of the beach. The estate's high stone walls, flanked by trailing creepers, offer complete sanctuary from the outside world. Dominated by an infinity pool providing views over the clear, warm waters of the bay, guests can choose to laze in the pool, bask on the beach between cooling dips in the ocean or with a good book in hand, enjoy the breeze on a deckchair shaded by the ancient trees.
Estate One is the only estate with a bungalow bedroom with a fossil wall feature and attached to a private jacuzzi sited within its own personal, walled courtyard, complete with garden. As an intimate and cosy hideaway, its seclusion is much appreciated by those who prize private time together or want a quiet, contemplative retreat. The estate features:
Within the inner boundaries of this estate, it is immediately obvious that one has entered a hilltop property. Estate Seven's unique genius loci is the many lofty knolls, each on a different elevation offering an unusual top view of the forest canopy, the grounds and the sea. Each little valley and knoll on this property is left in its pristine state, yet in beautiful partnership with its built structures.
As one of the largest, and hilliest of all the estates, all the structures are built on staggered levels, following the varying slopes of the land resulting in different bungalow bedrooms enjoying the most secluded and expansive private spaces. The structures in this estate are built further from each other than in other estates. The separateness appeals to guests who prefer some time alone within their own private garden space instead of congregating with the rest of their group. The estate features:
Estate Six is the sunniest of all the estates and is embraced by the natural sunlight and open skies. The genius loci is found in the naturally open arena, beautifully juxtaposed with the neighbouring stands of gigantic ancient trees.
Sprawled beneath age-old lofty trees on the eastern ridge of the area, it is anchored by a long lawn and lap pool providing a natural congregating point for family bonding times. Parents with little children can keep watch over their young from their bungalow bedrooms as the children gambol on the lawn or play in the pool while nature’s chorus of cicadas and birdsong plays in the background.
A hot spa just next to the pool is an added attraction, as is the unobstructed sky for viewing eagles soaring above. Each of the three bungalow bedrooms features a private balcony or verandah that together offer views of the many layers of the rainforest. The estate features:
The natural fresh water pond within the grounds is undoubtedly the genius loci of Estate Two as it is an unusual occurrence for a location of such proximity to the beach. Surrounding this body of water are three luxuriant stands of native bamboo, and within it, a tiny island with a rainforest tree. Maintaining the pond's level, contours and depth, it was massaged into the swimming pool making it the only estate with a vast naturally formed fresh water pond.
Located in the private enclave of Marina Bay within mere metres of the shoreline, the estate winds around the water body with a carved wooden bridge linking stands of prehistoric cycads with native bamboos. Of its three bungalow bedrooms, two have outdoor baths in their private gardens, while the third has steps leading directly from the bedroom into the pool, perfect for a romantic moonlight swim. The estate features:
