From alluring temples and time-forgotten caves, to bustling markets and sleepy fishing villages, Asia is a treasure-trove rich in cultural wonders. Sights that fascinate, enchant and inspire. Below are three of our favourites, accompanied by the perfect hotel to match your experience.
Angkor Wat – Amansara
The ‘7th Wonder of the World’, Angkor Wat astounds in its beauty and grandeur. Rising above the city of Siem Reap, in the northwest of Cambodia, lies this myriad of ancient temples and scenic waterlily moats. From afar, it appears to be a giant mass of stone on one level with a causeway leading to the centre, but upon entering you will discover a complex set of towers, galleries and chambers linked by stairways.
Not only is Cambodia home to one of our favourite sights, but also one of our favourite resorts. The exceptional Amansara. Only ten minutes from Angkor Wat, this award-winning resort features elegant suites graced with private courtyards and soaking tubs. Meanwhile, the spa offers the perfect retreat after a day of discovery.
Petitenget Temple – The Oberoi
In Seminyak, an area of Bali well-known for its cutting-edge bars, restaurants and trendy boutiques, the Petitenget Temple provides a contrast to its modern surroundings. Ascending the dragon staircase, you will be taken to a vast courtyard inhabited by ancient shrines and small pavilions. At the end of the day, head to the adjacent beach and bask in beautiful views as the sun sets over the horizon.
At The Oberoi, enjoy the best of Balinese hospitality in a calm and serene beach location. Close to the temple, the resort features a cluster of luxury villas with thatched roofs, some with private pools. On-site, you will find fine dining restaurants, extensive leisure facilities and a spa with open-air massage pavilions.
Goa Gajah – COMO Shambhala
Set on the western edge of Bedulu Village, Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century, originally built as a spiritual place for meditation. Down a flight of stairs, its walls filled with rock-carvings, you will reach a large central cave with bathing pools, fountains and various ancient relics. At the southern end of the cave, rice fields scatter and small streams lead to the Petanu River.
Poised in a lush green valley, the COMO Shambhala Estate is around a ten minute drive from Goa Gajah. Upon your arrival here, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. A vast world of ferns and foliage, and wildlife and water, where monkeys swing from trees and the River Ayung flows right through the landscape. The villas are truly amazing, with private pools set to the backdrop of incredible forest views.
