Celebrity Cruises launched Celebrity Edge in early December 2019. Destinology MD Deborah Windle, was thrilled to join Celebrity Edge on her recent maiden voyage - this followed a moving, naming ceremony at Port Everglades, Florida, where the ship’s Godmother, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzi, spoke and gave her blessing.
Celebrity Edge totally surpasses the expectations of a traditional cruise ship - Edgy by name and most definitely edgy by nature!
‘What an experience!’ Says Deborah
‘If you ever asked yourself ‘is a cruise the right holiday for me?’ then Celebrity Edge will answer you loud and clear – yes! It’s been designed to appeal to today’s modern cruise-crowd with its innovative use of technology, and sharp, contemporary design. I’m not a cruise aficionado but really, what’s not to love?’
Celebrity used the latest 3D technology to create the ship, from the 'Magic Carpet' - the world’s first cantilevered floating platform, to the Edge Villas, which simply put, look like the very latest 2-storey apartments, with their indoor/outdoor living. On Celebrity Edge there is also a futuristic rooftop garden with cinema, art installations and spa.
Food & Drink
Celebrity Edge features 29 restaurants, bars, lounges and cafes and their motto is – ‘Experience the world without leaving your table’. Complimentary dining options include the Tuscan Restaurant, Cyprus Restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine and Normandie which serves French dishes. Speciality dining includes Fine Cut Steakhouse, Le Grand Bistro, a seafood restaurant and a Rooftop Garden Grill. There are also a variety of bars and lounges such as Eden, The Club, a Martini Bar and pool bar. What makes these cafes, bars and restaurants stand out is their modern, out of this world, concept design.
Celebrity Edge will bring a whole new experience to cruising with their six 2-storey Edge Villas, which are 950 square feet. They feature outdoor space with a day bed, lounge area along with the master bedroom on the first floor and a living area on the ground floor, something never seen on a cruise ship before.
There are also a number of other suites which include The Penthouse Suite which has a large living space and a private terrace with a plunge pool and daybed. 'Cabin' is the last word that comes to mind when it comes to Edge accommodation. The Iconic Suite is positioned high on top of the ship, above the bridge and features its very own plunge pool, daybed and large open planning living area. Looking at the accommodation on Celebrity Edge, it is like nothing ever seen or experienced before on a cruise ship. What do you think?
The first thing that you might notice about the spa is the unparalleled design. Inspired by nature and the four elements of water, earth and air, the spa offers a variety of beauty, wellness and fitness experiences whilst you are onboard.
‘This is not a cruise ship - it is the floating future!’
World famous designer Kelly Hoppen MBE has designed the spaces alongside advanced technology. The Sea Thermal Suite is the heart of the spa and offers eight distinctive spaces which harness the natural elements. It features heated loungers and tile flooring, a 'float' room with floating basket chairs and floor to ceiling windows, a salt room to ease respiratory and skin ailments, a Crystalarium room with natural stone walls and an infrared sauna, which heats the air to relieve stress and calm the body. There is also state of the art treatment tables including the Wave MLW Amphibia table, the WellMassage 4D table and the MLX Quartz table.
And there’s more!
The Resort Deck features the ship’s main swimming pool, a rooftop garden, jogging track and an adults-only Solarium. It is a fantastic spot for both day and night entertainment and is inspired by childhood playgrounds. There are films played here in the evenings, live bands and rooftop dining at the Garden Grill. The Pool Deck features large, oversized art installations such as treetop sculptures, two 2-storey hot tubs and a large 165ft wide by 18 feet high private cabanas. The Pool Bar is located adjacent to the 25-yard lap pool and has a resort vibe about it.
Says Deborah 'I particularly love how the Edge has taken practical ideas to improve tendering whilst simultaneously creating something unique – take the Magic Carpet – a bright orange platform that glides 14 decks up and down the side of the ship, morphing into a bar, restaurant or live music lounge depending on where it stops. At sea level, it’s docking station giving easy access to the tender boats – a real help for passengers with mobility problems or families with small children’
Destinology's Deborah Windle is not the only one who’s been won over by Edge.
