Whilst Portugal is normally a summer holiday destination, April is a great time to visit the country and explore Lisbon and everything the city has to offer with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. There are almond blossoms blooming around the city and temperatures are around a very pleasurable 20°C so instead of just sun-worshipping and swimming you can get your fill of culture and history. The coastal city of Douro is also a great place to visit at this time of the year and you can discover the famous Dom Luis I Bridge, which is also said to be the country’s food capital. We also recommend checking out Lagos which is down south and you can visit the walled old town as well as visit its cliffs which offer stunning views.

Season –Spring-like – end of the rainy season, pre-summer heat

April is a fantastic time to visit Namibia due to the moderate temperatures which are perfect for exploration, and the greenery popping up amongst the usual orange arid desert scene. The country itself is filled with contrasts with its stark Skeleton Coast, immense Fish River Canyon, spooky Sossusvlei filled with fossil trees along with so much more. The rainy season should have ended so you will be sure to see the sun and blue skies, but April offers a fresh, spring-like feel. There are plenty of things to see and do in Namibia and if you are into wildlife this is a fantastic option due to the amazing wildlife and landscapes of Etosha National Park. For culture and history buffs there are the German colonial towns of Swakopmund and Windhoek where you can find some delicious German beers. For those seeking activities try canoeing on the longest stream in South Africa, Orange River. For a bit of art in the outdoors, we recommend visiting Twyfelfontein which is well known for its engravings and rock paintings.
Temperature – Low of 7°C, high of 18°C
Season - Spring
Travel time from the UK – 8/10 hours

April is a great time to visit New York because the weather is not too warm or cold and there are fewer tourists around unless you go during Easter break! Events during this time include the Tribeca Film Festival, the Easter Parade and Macy’s Flower Show. The only slight negative is that there can be rainy days, so we recommend packing warm clothes, especially in early April, along with an umbrella, waterproof jacket and long pants. Layering is key as it can be unseasonably warm as well! Known for its humidity in the peak of summer, in April there is barely any humidity, so the air is fresh and crisp, perfect for exploring all the city has to offer! For baseball fans it is also the opening day for the Yankee Stadium and for The Mets at Citi Field, the start of a new season begins.

You may have heard of the Full Moon Party, a particularly boisterous event that happens every year in Thailand, but have you heard of the equally crazy Thai New year or Songkran? This is a 5-day public holiday which happens in mid-April where the country turns into a giant water fight with both locals and tourists taking part all in a very good-natured manner. One place which really knows how to party is Koh Samui so if you want to party until the sun rises this is the place for you! The weather is also cooler so it is great weather for exploration and looking around cultural and historical sites and areas of interest.

Although Zambia may not be as popular as it’s big gaming neighbours such as Tanzania and Botswana, it is well worth a visit, especially in April. One of the most popular places to visit is Victoria Falls which are the largest in the world in terms of volume. These are often shrouded by spray and are called ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ by the locals. April is the beginning of the dry season, so it is much easier to see the falls. Another popular area to visit is South Luangwa National Park which has one of the highest densities of big game anywhere in Africa. Along with this, there are much fewer safari vehicles trying to get the best views than many other places. To switch things up, you can then enjoy a few days aboard a luxury houseboat on Lake Kariba where you take in the Big Five from the privacy of your deck and we have some fantastic tailor-made tours in South Africa.
Las Vegas, USA

Arguably the perfect time to visit Las Vegas is in April but keep in mind that this is also Spring Break so there will be plenty of tourists in April around this time. But the temperatures are mild, and the sun sits high in the sky during the day. It may get very slightly cooler at night so make sure to bring a jacket or a sweater for when the sun sets, just in case. The pool season also begins in April and for golfers, this is the best time of year to play without the heat and humidity of the summer. Other ways to make the most of the great weather conditions is to have lunch on the outdoor terrace at LAGO, visit The Park Las Vegas, The LINQ and in the evening sample the cocktails at Rhumbar located at Caesars Palace. If you would like to catch a show in April, performers include Barry Manilow, Bruno Mars, Keith Urban and Robbie Williams.

Visiting the Caribbean in April where depending on the island you choose, temperatures can range from highs of 27°C to lows of 21°C. For slightly cooler weather try the Bahamas and if you really want to turn up the heat, we recommend Trinidad and Tobago where you can see highs of 29°C. On average it rains seven days of the month so there will be lots of sunshine to enjoy. If you want to swim in the sea the water is warm in April, so it is perfect for swimming and watersports. Events taking place in the Caribbean include The Tobago Jazz Experience, Sailing Week in Antigua, held in late April as well as St. Barth Film Festival, a 5-day celebration of Caribbean film. We recommend visiting towards the end of April to avoid the Spring Break crowd, especially in the Bahamas, Jamaica and Dominican Republic. If you want to visit various parts of the Caribbean it might be worth considering a cruise. Pack like you would for a summer beach holiday with plenty of sunscreen, linen and cotton clothing and of course flip-flops.

As the most Southernmost location in the Greek islands, it is also the hottest and April is a great time to make full use of the warm yet fresh temperatures and the lack of tourists, just make sure that this is not in the Easter holidays when the crowds will come. It is rare for there to be any rain and temperatures are generally in the low twenties. You can still relax on the beach and take a swim in relative peace and quiet. If you head on south you will find a more unspoilt Crete with mountains, traditional villages and tavernas serving tasty meats, wine and cheese and if you are brave enough, a few shots of house raki. Yamas!

South Africa is a great place to visit in April because the weather is bright sun, but temperatures aren’t too hot, and it is a really good time of year for road adventures and safaris. You may spot lions and zebras on safari, visit the highest level of Table Mountain and look out across Cape Town. Wine lovers can visit the popular Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Winelands and have a taste and tour. We also recommend the Cape of Good Hope which is well worth an exploration, as well as meeting the perfect penguins who live on Boulder Beach along with the Dyer Island fur seals.
