"In October we welcome autumn, half-term holidays, the spooky holiday of Halloween, and some perfect winter sun destinations"

The temperature in October – 25°C high; 20°C low

Flight time from UK – 12 hours

In October it is springtime in Mauritius; the weather is starting to warm up after winter and it isn’t too humid or rainy. Similar to springtime in the UK, the flowers are starting to bloom, and the sounds of the rainforest inhabitants can be heard awakening to the warmer temperatures. As the weather is fresher and clear this is your chance to go exploring! We recommend visiting Grand Baie if you are an adrenaline junky as there are plenty of watersports and surfing here and you can even go for a stroll in the jungle if you want a change from the beach. The Black River Gorges National Park houses over 300 species of flowering plants as well as endangered birds such as the pink pigeon and the Mauritius parakeet. If you are lucky enough, you may even spot the exceptionally cute Mauritian flying fox which is a species of megabat with a whopping wingspan of 80 centimetres. Very cute.

USA Road Trip

Flight time - 8-10 hours

Temperature - varies depending on the state

For fans of Halloween who want to see how it is done BIG style in the USA, October is a fantastic time to visit the country and get involved in the spooky celebrations! Salem, Massachusetts will certainly provide the full Halloween experience. Known for its historical witch trials, it holds guided tours of haunted areas, trial and hanging re-enactments, parades and a witch’s circle. On the night itself, fireworks, witches’ balls and magic shows are on offer. There is also the Witch House Museum, home to one of the judges on the infamous trials, one of the last remaining buildings connected to them. Another place to visit is Sleepy Hollow, New York which is the well-known grounds of Washington Irvine’s Headless Horseman legend. Phillipsburg Manor features vampires, witches, ghosts and state of the art special effects. Other activities in the area include haunted hayrides, live music, street fairs and more. One of the most haunted places in the country is the cruise liner, Queen Mary, which is permanently docked in Long Beach, California. 'Dark harbour' begins each October and hosts a variety of terrifying experiences throughout the month. There are haunted mazes containing over 200 spirits and ghosts, many of which are said to haunt the ship and there are rides, monsters, live shows and music. Do you dare?

Greek Islands

Temperature - 24°C high; 16°C low

Flying time – 3/4 hours

Starting with Santorini, the island which historically was known as the ancient civilisation of Thira until a huge volcano wiped out most of the island. Today you can see steep cliffs which plunge down to the Aegean Sea, whitewash houses, turquoise pools and stunning views from every angle. During October there are far fewer crowds, the weather is warm but not too hot and humid and therefore perfect for exploring the steep and winding streets of Santorini. The sunsets are still stunning from your perfect perch in Santorini too! If you want to see some historic sites in more bearable weather then the historic site of Akrotiri, where you will see the Minoan Bronze Age settlement that was once buried beneath the volcanic eruption, is worth a visit. Some of the other smaller Greek islands such as the Dodecanese and Cyclades are still surprisingly warm during October with some stunning beaches if you want to go island hopping.

Average temperature – 14°C high, 4°C low

Flight time -1/2 hours

Germany is a fantastic destination if you want to party and drink beer in October as it is Oktoberfest season. Ja, aufregend! Originating in Munich in 1811, this 16-18 day event of eating, drinking and dancing is now celebrated across the country and some would argue, across the globe. But of course, Germany does it best! If you happen to miss Oktoberfest then try Stuttgart in Baden Württemberg which hosts the second biggest beer festival in Germany. Berlin hosts the Festival of Lights in October where the city's most famous attractions light up in different colours and patterns. A trip to the Black Forest in the autumn season looks misty and even more mysterious and magical like something out of a Grimm fairytale.

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast

Average daily high - 26°C

Queensland is the second-largest state in Australia and dominates the north-east corner of the country. It is well known for its fine weather and in October it has warm spring-type weather. This kind of weather is fantastic for spending time at the beach, exploring the Daintree Rainforest and not forgetting, the underwater magic that is the Great Barrier Reef. At Destinology, we offer a 13 day  Queensland tour which takes in whale season and the lovely tropical sunshine, starting with your flight from the UK to Brisbane and car hire so you can make your way to the Sunshine Coast. Then you travel onwards up to Noosa’s Natural Wonders, further north to the largest sand island on earth, Fraser island and then finally a short drive up to Hervey Bay where you can take a boat trip to see the migrating whales. There are also dolphin watching cruises, kayaking and jet ski tours.
