If you’ve ever written up a bucket list, the Aurora Borealis fits into one of three categories:

1) It’s top of the list.

2) you’ve forgotten about them but now rush to include them (your sins are forgiven).

3) You have an incomplete bucket list.

It really is quite that simple. They’re something you must see before you die. Where better to view them, then, than the Canadian wilderness? Blachford Lake Lodge is so remote that you can only access it via ski plane and you can try your hand at skiing, hiking and all manner of survival activities. Each night, you prepare yourself to hopefully catch a glimpse of the impressive, show-stealing, Northern Lights. After six nights in the remote Northwest Territories, you’ll head out to Toronto, for where you can visit the CN Tower, or the witness the sheer ferocity of the great Niagara Falls.

Practical Info

  • Day 1
    First step into the wilderness

Depart to the wilderness of Canada’s Northwest Territories, a land of glacial lakes and primeval forests, arriving in the remote town of Yellowknife. Founded on gold mining, and with a strong First Nation heritage, Yellowknife is one of those frontier towns that feels like it’s on the edge of the world. Relax for the evening, and look to the horizon for a possible first aurora view.

  • Day 2
    Where the Wild Things Are

This is where the adventure really begins, with a ski plane flight to Blachford Lake Lodge, it’s so remote it’s the only way to get there. Soar over the magnificent Great Slave Lake, and an empty, vast landscape. Settle in and relax, with views over the great lake amid the serenity of the wilderness. Tuck into a blend of traditional and contemporary dishes prepared and cooked with fresh, local ingredients.

This wilderness has no light pollution, and you’ll be alerted for any signs of the Northern Lights with the lodge’s AuroraWatch service.

  • Day 3
Take a Walk on the Wild Side

It’s not all about the Aurora here, there’s plenty of included adventure activities. Accompanied by a guide, you can try snowshoeing through the arctic forests, taking in the incredible scenery, wildlife and gaining an understanding of this unique habitat. In the evening, feel free to get stuck into one of the manual workshops on offer at Blachford Lake Lodge. You can make lip balm, a wooden dream catcher or even hand-made paint.

After this, enjoy dinner and a few drinks. Retire to your room or stay up, waiting for the Northern Lights, it’s up to you!

There are so many incredible experiences on offer at Blachford Lake Lodge and you can take your pick which suits you. Guided snowmobile outings are great for those with a need for speed, ice skating is another great option, or try out cross country skiing.

If the weather discourages outdoor activities, feel free to grab a book and read, or take part in some group yoga. For a true Canadian experience, climb into the inviting outdoor hot tub and soak under the big skies.

Enjoy yet another incredible dinner and make the most of this time to socialise with fellow travellers.

Each night after dinner, find your spot for aurora viewing. Relax under the stars by the frozen lake at the traditional tipi around the camp fire. It’s a spectacular 360 degree panorama, and in a uniquely Canadian style. The aurora can even be seen from your bed or the outdoor hot tub.

    Return to Civilisation

Depart to Yellowknife on the ski plane. The Old Town reveals a glimpse of the history of Yellowknife, a vibrant, chaotic and transient town of gold seekers which became the largest settlement in the Northwest Territories. There are art galleries, houseboats, monuments and nationally famous restaurants here so you’ll be able to find just the right thing to pass your time.

Fly to Toronto and break the journey with a few nights in the capital of Ontario and home of the famous CN Tower. Check into Le Germain Hotel Maple Leaf Square before exploring this incredible city. If you’ve a head for heights, grab tickets to view the skyline from the CN Tower’s observation deck. But if you’re a little tired after flying, just relax and enjoy the bar or gym or restaurant at the hotel.

Witness the Majesty of Mother Nature

Head out on a full day trip to Niagara Falls. Now for the opportunity to see what is, in our humble opinion, the second potential Wonder of the World on this trip. If you were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, then this will only add to the natural wonder. The sheer volume of water that flows over these falls is simply incredible. Spending the day here, mesmerised by the mighty power of our planet, is a perfect way to round off this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
