    Ancient Istanbul

After you’ve enjoyed the hotel’s sumptuous breakfast offering, get ready to embark on your private half day city tour of Istanbul, where your local Destinology guide is on hand to take you on a cultural and historical journey through Istanbul’s intrepid past.

    Hagia Sophia

Starting off with the famous Hagia Sophia at almost 1,500 years old it's one of the city’s great marvels of architecture. Now a museum, this ever-present beauty has been in a tug-of-war for most of its existence, living its life as a Byzantine cathedral, a Greek Orthodox cathedral, a Roman Catholic cathedral and finally an imperial Ottoman mosque.

    Blue Mosque

It's then time to move on to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or Blue Mosque as it is popularly known. Sitting pretty next to the Hagia Sophia, interiors are covered in hand-painted blue tiles while the exterior is adorned in blue lighting at night framing the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes for a stunning spectacle.

    Grand Bazaar

Finally, it’s time to shop like the locals with a trip to the Grand Bazaar: this ancient shopping centre is often regarded as one of the world’s first shopping malls and offers the perfect opportunity to haggle yourself some local Ottoman treasures, hand-woven Anatolian rugs or take in the sights, sounds and smells over Turkish coffee and Turkish mint tea with a local pastry.

After the tour is complete you're free to spend the rest of your day exploring Istanbul at leisure or enjoy the facilities of your hotel where your local guide will return you.

Landmark
Istanbul

Hagia Sophia

The icon of Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia has dominated the city's skyline for over 1,400 years ago since 537 AD. To give an idea of how impressive this age truly is, upon its completion the world was still without Chichen Itza (600 AD), Notre-Dame (1163), The Leaning Tower of Pisa (1173), Angor Wat (1200) and St Peter's Basilica (1620).

Blending Christianity with Islam, Hagia Sophia started life as a Byzantine cathedral and is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture with its impressive basilica dome. It then briefly served under the Roman Empire as a Roman Catholic Cathedral before the Ottoman's captured Constantinople and declared it the imperial mosque of the Ottoman Empire, in which it gained its famous minarets.

Then in 1935, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey and its first president declared it a museum in a bid to secularise the new Turkish Republic, after previously changing the capital's official name from Constantinople to Istanbul.
