See a country of contrasts on this two week tours around central section of Honshu, Japans biggest island and often referred to as The Mainland.  Start in the magnificent, modern metropolis of Tokyo where skyscrapers and neon lights are separated by ancient monuments and shrines.  Travel across country to the West Coast and spend time in Kanazawa, home to the only active Giesha district outside of Kyoto.  Travel south and spend time in Kyoto before visiting Hiroshima and learning of the terrible effects of the atomic bomb and how the city has been rebuilt.  End the journey with a Shinkansen ‘Bullet Train’ ride back to Tokyo.

    UK to Japan

    Depart the UK on an overnight service to Tokyo. Upon arrival, transfers will be waiting to take you to the hotel for the first night in Tokyo with the rest of the first day in Japan at leisure.

    Tokyo Full Day City Tour

    Take a day tour of this fascinating city with a local guide, making use of Tokyo’s comprehensive and user friendly public transport system.  The tour includes several city highlights:

    • Meiji Shrine
    • Omotesando shopping street
    • Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town
    • Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest temple
    • Boat cruise on the Sumida River
    • Hamarikyu Garden

  • Day 4

    Spend a full day of free time to explore Tokyo at your leisure.  A haven for foodies, head to Tsukiji Fish Market early on to explore the bustling stalls.  Maybe the urban sprawl of Tokyo’s CBD is your thing and sample the famous scramble crossing at Shibuya or leave the hustle and bustle behind for a stroll around the Imperial Palace.  In the evening, head to Shinjuku to sample some of Japans best restaurants and famous karaoke bars.

    Tokyo to Kanazawa

    Travel in comfort on Japan's fast and efficient high speed rail network. The trains – often referred as the Bullet Train - travel at speeds of up to 300km/hr and cover the 450km distance to Kanazawa on the West Coast in approximately two and a half hours.

    Kanazawa Full Day Tour

    Spend your day on the Western side of the country learning all about Kanazawa on this detailed tour of the sights and sounds around the city including:

    • Kanazawa Castle Park
    • Kenrokuen Gardens

    Kanzawa to Kyoto

    Travel aboard the Limited Express Thunderbird from Kanazawa to Kyoto. The train takes approximately 2 hours to travel 225km.

    Kyoto Full Day Tour

    Explore the former imperial capital of Japan with a knowledgeable local guide, utilizing Kyoto’s comprehensive bus system to visit some of the city’s famous World Heritage Sites. The amazing sites to be seen in this fascinating city include:

    • Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion)
    • Nijo Castle
    • Heian Shrine
    • Nishiki Market – “Kyoto’s Kitchen”
    • Kiyomizu Temple (Pure Water Temple)

  • Day 9

    A full day to further explore Kyoto and its surrounding area. Why not take a short trip to Nara which has significant temples and artwork dating back to the 8th century when it was Japan's Capital. Deer roam freely in the grounds of Todai-ji Temple, home to Daibutsuden, the largest wooden building in the world.

    You could either make a stop at Uji on the way to Nara or visit Byodo-in Temple famous for its Phoenix Hall. Constructed in 1053, this hall now graces the back of the 10 yen coin, or Fushimi Inari famous for its corridors of tori gates as seen in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

    Kyoto to Hiroshima

    Another day, another bullet train.  Wake early for a direct service from Kyoto to Hiroshima or change en-route in Kobe or Osaka.  Total time should be less than two hours.

    Hiroshima Full Day City Tour

    Today enjoy a day tour of Hiroshima with a local guide. Highlights include:

    • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
    • Miyajima Island

    Hiroshima to Tokyo

    A final Shinakansen ride from Hiroshima to Tokyo.  The fast trains cover the near 900km distance in under 5 hours but you will need to change the which Bullet Train you are travelling on in Osaka or Kobe.

    Japan to the UK

    A final morning spent in Tokyo before a transfer from your hotel in to either Narita or Haneda airport, depending on your preferred flights.
