With private guiding using Japan’s super efficient transport network, free time, lodging in a traditional inn as well as modern city hotels, this is an introduction to the main sites as well as experiences of Japan’s beguiling culture – not just seeing from a coach or train window hurried along with brief photo stops. See the counter culture Harajuku area of Tokyo, soak in an onsen, try on a kimono, try sushi and sashimi, relax in a Kyoto garden and travel on the famous bullet train. All this and some time to experience this wonderful mix of ancient and modern, this safe and welcoming culture, at your own pace.

Overnights flight to Tokyo, you’ll get a meet and greet at the airport on arrival and hop on the shuttle to the city centre, an easy and regular service. The rest of the day is at leisure, and Tokyo is an easy and safe city to wander around to get a first taste of this crazy, exciting city.
On a private excursion of Tokyo, navigating the excellent public transport network, you’ll see some of its quieter corners, ancient gardens and temples as well as the modern architecture in the various neighbourhoods that make up the mega-city. Explore the Hamarikyu gardens and take part in a tea ceremony. See the Meiji shrine, a serene oasis in the city close to the super-cool Harajuku area. Then onto the river from a trip among gleaming towers and small temples to Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town.
A free day today. There is so much to enjoy in the capital, particularly getting into the rhythm of things. The Tokyo National Museum in particular is notable for its collection of priceless kimonos, samurai swords and distinctive Japanese art. Join a street food tour and eat like a local. Or take the train to Nikko in the mountains or Kamakura by the sea using the rail pass.
Head into the mountains, towards the famous Mount Fuji and the Hakone National park, amid the valleys, lakes and slopes for a taste of Japan’s countryside. Stay in a traditional ryokan; a traditional Japanese inn furnished with futon beds, tatami flooring and paper sliding doors. Relax in a hot spring bath, known as an onsen, and as part of the experience a multi course dinner of sushi, sashimi and tempura is included in these traditional surroundings.

It doesn’t have to be all fast moving in Japan and today is free to unwind in the natural surroundings. An included transport pass offers the Hakone Tozan train, zig-zagging along the valley, the Owakundani ropeway to see volcanic hot springs and even the quirky replica pirate ship ride across lake Ashinoko. Alternatively there’s the Old Tokaido walking trail from the Hakone Shrine.

From the hot springs and shrines, it’s back to the future with a journey on the Bullet Train to Kyoto. Spend the rest of the day exploring the city in your own pace, or book a culture fix with a visit to a sake brewery, a cooking class or see a geisha performance in a traditional theatre.
See and experience the gardens and temples of Kyoto with a local guide. A profusion of colour, precise design and artistry combine for your own moments of Zen and a window to the Japanese psyche. Visit 17th century Nijo Castle and see the ‘chirping nightingale’ floors, Ryoan-ji Temple rock garden and the gleaming Golden Temple. The Kiyomizu-dera Temple sits above the city and is exquisitely carved. The afternoon ends with a stroll along the narrow lanes of Higashiyama.
The authentic, traditional side of Kyoto can be hard to find among large coach groups and scheduled tours. So with your personal guide today, visit a traditional wooden townhouse, try on a kimono and meet with a tea master for a tea ceremony. You can also try your hand at the art of origami with a local artist, and create something to take home. The afternoon is free, perhaps to take a trip to Nara by train, or experience further the serenity of the gardens.
