There’s time to lay back in the afternoon and in the evening, head to a traditional Syrian Christian home to savour home-made dinner with Nimmi and Paul. This community, amongst the oldest Christian communities in the world, traces its origins to the time that traders arrived here from faraway shores, lured by the tales of aromatic spices. With over 15 years of professional experience, Nimmi is a local expert on Syrian Christian recipes as well as traditional Kerala cuisine. The evening ends with a performance of Kathakali dance, a true Keralan art form.

Begin the morning with a guided Pranayama session, an ancient Yogic discipline of breath control to relax the body and mind. The swaying coconut trees by the banks of the Vembanad Lake; houseboats languidly floating on green waters; herons waiting patiently for fish to surface – sights synonymous with Kerala’s natural beauty make Kumarakom a traveller’s delight. A cruise through this region aboard kettuvalloms, the local boats that are equipped with all the mod-cons for a comfortable stay, offer the chance to observe life in the area and immerse in quiet reflection as the world passes by.
