Travel from the UK to California. Several options exist for direct flights from London to San Francisco with Thomas Cook also offering an option from Manchester. Upon arrival collect a car hire and travel north of the city, crossing over the famous Golden Gate Bridge to the bay side city of Sausalito, offering the charm of a quaint Mediterranean seaside village tucked amongst the hills of Marin County.
Spend two full days around San Francisco Bay. From the northern edge, in Sausalito, enjoy wonderful views across the water to the skyline of downtown San Francisco while the peninsula is home to several great parks and recreational areas including the Muir Woods National Monument, home to some of the famous Giant Redwoods. And while you are so close, take the Blue & Gold Ferry direct from Sausalito to Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoy exploring the streets, cafes and amazing waterfront of the City by the Bay.

Drive north from Sausalito into California’s famed wine country. First port of call is Sonoma County, home to over 425 wineries, stretching over to the Pacific Coast.
Covering over 60,000 acres between the Pacific Ocean and the Mayacamas Mountains, Sonoma is home to 18 separate wine regions, making it Northern California’s largest wine producer so a visit to the wineries is an absolute must. To accompany the award-winning wine, you will also find perfect food parings or if wine isn’t your thing, breweries abound too with some fantastic craft beers and ales. With Sonoma County stretching all the way to the Pacific Ocean, don’t miss out on some fantastic fresh seafood and even spot whales from Sonoma Coast State Park. Another highlight of Sonoma County are the Wine Castles such as Ledson Winery & Vineyards.
Drive distance – 40 miles
Take the road east over the Maycamas Mountains and descend into world famous Napa Valley. Only 30 miles long and a few miles wide, the concentration of over 400 wineries in such a small area leads to a wonderful area to explore.
Try the award-winning wines from over 400 wineries and vineyards – especially Napa Valleys prized Cabernet Sauvignon. But Napa isn’t all about the wine with plenty to offer in terms of culinary delights, with outdoor adventures available all-over including boating on Lake Berryessa. A great way to explore the Valley is on the Wine Train. Leave the car behind and allow the Napa Valley Wine Train to guide you around with fine meals on board and up to four vineyard and winery visits.
Drive distance – 75 miles
A final day to appreciate the beauty all around you in Napa Valley before heading south. Drive around San Pablo Bay cross the Oakland Bay Bridge and you travel to San Francisco Airport to drop off the car and take an overnight flight back to the UK.
