  • Days 1 - 2
    To Beijing
    Overnight flight to Beijing. On arrival you will be met by your guide for your private transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city. Passing the capital’s modern skyscrapers, you may see glimpses of ancient temples and parks. Settle in to your hotel in the heart of the city near Tiananmen Square, with the rest of the day free to relax and explore.

  • Day 3
    Forbidden City & Beijing’s Hutongs Walking Tour

    Head with your guide this morning into the Forbidden City. Entering through the Meridien Gate, you’ll quickly get an impression of the grand scale of the palace which was for centuries in the times of the Emperors closed off to mere mortals. A full restoration process has been taking place in recent year, opening the previously closed halls and city wall walkways.
    Then walk the short distance to the Hutongs for a walking tour of this part of the city characterised by winding alleys and traditional houses, a way of life changing but with an essence dating back millennia. With an expert guide choose from a theme of Chinese folk tales, everyday culture and characters and the art and cultural movements which took place in the city. The rest of the day is free to explore Wanfujing and the Tiananmen Square area.

  • Day 4
    The Great Wall of China at Jinshanling

    Depart this morning with your private car and guide for a full day visit to the Jinshanling part of the Great Wall, a spectacular and less visited area. Here the wall snakes along mountain ridges into the far distance. There is the option of a 3 to 4 hour hike to get among the wild and more untouched areas. (link this to point of interest).  Your expert Great Wall guide will share the story of the wall and its place in Chinese history.

  • Day 5
    Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace

    Early morning visit to the Temple of Heaven, one of the most iconic of China’s ancient Buddhist temples. In the morning, the surrounding park is alive with the residents of Beijing practicing tai chi, martial arts, painting and Chinese calligraphy on the flagstones, ideal for a glimpse of these vibrant traditions.
    Then depart a little out of the city centre to the Summer Palace. The palaces, temples and pavilions and lakes were developed around the gardens in the 18th century by Emperor Qianlong.

  • Day 6
    To Xian by train

    Morning private transfer to the train station and board the high speed train to Xian, a six hour journey. Relax on the train as you travel out of the metropolis, past villages and green fields and into the heart of ancient China, the terminus of the Silk Road and the imperial city of Xian. You will be met on arrival for the transfer to your hotel. This afternoon a bike tour around the Xian will reveal the impressive city wall and Ming dynasty temples as well as the modern city.

  • Day 7
    Terracotta Warriors and rural Xian

    Travel out of the city by jeep into the rugged loess rock formations, where cave dwellings dating back centuries can be seen. Continue to the site of the army of the Terracotta Warriors, the awe-inspiring and uniquely detailed statues guarding the tomb of Emperor Qin.
    In the evening taste some of the flavours of Xian on a guided food tour by tuk tuk. Xian’s old silk route location has brought influences from across Asia. The tour finishes with a visit to a microbrewery, another ancient tradition.

  • Day 8
    To Chengdu by train

    This morning visit the recently opened Tomb of Emperor Jing, one of China’s most enlightened Emperors.
    Head to the train station and board the high speed train to Chengdu. Relax as you travel into Sichuan province with a 4 hour journey with the landscape becoming more mountainous as you head west.
    On arrival transfer to your centrally located hotel. You will be taken for dinner of Sichuan cuisine, known for its spices and aromas, in a recommended local restaurant.

  • Day 9
    Chengdu and Panda Research Centre

    This morning visit the Panda Breeding Centre, which has a pleasant environment in which to see the efforts going into panda conservation in China. There are around 100 pandas in residence and it is probably the best place to see China’s iconic bear, as they are particularly difficult to see in the wild.
    Continue to the archaeological site of Sangxindui, in the countryside outside Chengdu this important horde of artefacts including masks and bronzes dates back four thousand years revealing an advanced Eastern culture.
    This evening visit the Sichuan Opera for a performance of song, fire-eating and folklore based on local mythology, a very lively art form.

  • Day 10
    To Guilin & Yangshou

    This morning visit the Wenshu temple and take fresh Chinese tea in the House of Tea. Stroll through the People’s Park where you can see people practise tai chi, dance, meditation and other exercises.
    Transfer to the airport and fly to Guilin, where you will be met on arrival for the drive to Yangshou.
    Yangshou lies on the banks of the Li River, surrounded by verdant limestone karst peaks, rice fields and farmland which seem pulled straight from a traditional Chinese painting. It is classic picture-postcard Asia and attracts travellers from all over the world to unwind and explore in the natural beauty.
    Settle in to your hotel and explore the West Street area with its shops, cafes and bars with a lively atmosphere.

  • Day 11
    Yangshou and Longshen

    Depart this morning for a trip into rural China and walk in the Longjii , Dragon’s Backbone, of towering rice terraces first cultivated over 700 years ago. This is one of Asia’s most distinctive sights and from April to October different colours are reflected in the waters. A guided walk of up to four hours leads along the terraces through traditional villages. (link point of interest)
    Return to Yangshou for some time to relax by the river.

    To Shanghai

    Transfer to Guilin airport for a flight to Shanghai. You will be met on arrival for your private transfer to the city centre.

    Shanghai

    Shanghai is a 21st century metropolis influenced by its historic position as China’s link to the outside world.  Explore the city in quirky style with a vintage sidecar tour from the French Concession district to the bund riverfront, passing the bustling neighbourhoods and backstreets of the metropolis.
    In the afternoon, a walking tour of the Bund with an expert guide will introduce the art deco buildings from when Shanghai was known as the Paris of the East, with the trading houses including the original Hong Kong Shanghai Bank. Hear the tales of the exotic past and at the same time see the space aged city all around with its gleaming skyscrapers.

  • Day 14
    Shanghai

    A half day guided tour of historic and cultural Shanghai. Visit the French Concession, a relic of the western enclaves now gentrified, and see Fuxing Park where the locals practise their early morning  rituals. Continue to lively Xintiandi and the alleyways of the old town, leading to the Yu Yuan gardens. These are a retreat from the city, featuring the traditional landscaping of Chinese gardens. Conclude with a visit to the renovated M50 industrial area, now a contemporary arts venue reflecting the ever-changing character of the city. The rest of the day is free for shopping or visiting other parts of this exciting city.
