Home to the very best product Thessaloniki has to offer, make sure you take a stroll through these two lively markets that seem to spill into one. Sample fish caught fresh that morning, creamy cheeses, vibrant spices and herbs and olives bursting with flavour. After you've shopped, small tavernas line the markets serving thick Greek coffee and breakfast bougatsas.
White Tower of Thessaloniki
After the Ottoman's captured Thessaloniki this waterfront tower was reconstructed to fortify the city's harbour, where it also served as a notorious prison and scene of mass executions, gaining the name the Red Tower. After Thessloniki was liberated in 1912 it's exterior was whitewashed and it now serves as a symbol of the city's transformation and a reminder of its chaotic past.
Hagia Sophia
With its Byzantine architecture based on Istanbul's famous Hagia Sophia, this is one of the oldest churches in the city still standing dating back to the 8th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arch of Galerius and Rotunda
Dating back to the 4th century AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Roman Emperor Galerius commisioned the two structures as a decoration for a royal precinct linked to his palace to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Satala.
