Évora University

Founded in the 1500s by Pope Paul IV and the future King Henry I, Évora University is the second oldest university in Portugal and classes are still attended here. Wander through the classic arcades and galleries that make up the central courtyard. You can also visit the classrooms for a unique look at historic teaching environments.

Capela dos Ossos

Capela dos Ossos is not for the faint-hearted. As an ossuary, the walls, pillars and arches are all lined with bones and skulls in ornate designs. These remains belonged to several thousand monks and were collected from crypts and cemeteries during the 16th century. The purpose of this arrangement was to remind worshippers of the transitory nature of life.

Cathedral of Évora

The Cathedral of Évora with its pink granite, towers and conical spires will grab your attention. Completed at the beginning of the 13th century, this cathedral is a fusion of architectural styles. It features a deep Gothic nave, Manueline choir and Baroque chapels. You can explore the entire building including the rooftop terrace with views over the town.

Roman Temple of Évora

As one of Portugal's most significant Roman monuments, the remains of the Roman Temple of Évora sit at the highest point of the city where Évora’s ancient forum once stood. This Corinthian temple originates to the 1st century and is likely to have been devoted to Diana. The Roman Temple of Évora has stood the test of time.

Museu de Évora

Located in a historical episcopal palace this museum dates back to the 1500s. It is a must-see attraction and is home to over 20,000 items. View paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, textiles, ceramics and gold-work that tell the story of Évora's heritage. There's plenty to see here including Renaissance works and a prized piece depicting Mary of the Passion.
