St. Petersburg things to do

St. Petersburg

Hermitage Museum

St. Petersburg’s most famous attraction is without a doubt the Hermitage Museum. Set in the beautiful and grandiose Winter Palace, the incredible collection here includes European art featuring famed impressionist paintings, Roman and Greek antiquities, and works by Rembrandt, Matisse and Titian. As an added bonus, you can stroll through the magnificent state rooms of the palace.

St. Petersburg

Tsarskoye Selo

It may be another palace, well technically two, but you cannot visit St. Petersburg without stopping by this final, spectacular royal residence. This site epitomises the lavishness of the Tsars and helps to contextualise their downfall during the Russian Revolution. Visit the Amber Room and dine in one of the lovely restaurants nearby.

St. Petersburg

Peterhof Palace

Named after its designer, Peter the Great, this palace took over ten years to complete and was modelled after the architecture of Versailles. Its founder would escape to this part of the city during the summer, giving it the fond moniker of the Summer Palace. Tour the fountains, parks, and staterooms of this glorious residence.

St. Petersburg

Nevsky Prospekt

The long, marvellous Nevsky Prospekt avenue is the most famous stretch in the city. Walking here will take you past the Kazan Cathedral, the Stroganov Palace, and Anichkov Bridge. At the eastern end of this street is St. Petersburg’s most exclusive shopping district filled with upscale boutiques and designer stores.

St. Petersburg

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

The joy of this delightful Russian Revival church, with its ornately decorated exterior and rainbow-coloured domes, is that it stands in stark contrast to the Neo-classical architecture of the palaces. Built in honour of Alexander the 2nd, this church is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks and a must-see attraction.
