The cultural capital of Cambodia, Siem Reap, is seeing tourism increase every year, attracted in part by the historic ruins of Angkor, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. High class resorts are keen to pick the most advantageous spots with Aman Resorts bagging the former guest villa of King Norodom Sihanouk which it has kitted it out with just 24 elite suites. Siem Reap is responding to the development with cafes, shops and handicraft markets etc. Walk a short distance alongside the river however and you’ll be greeted by traditional wooden houses, colonial style buildings, and pagodas – an architectural feast. In Wat Bo there is one of the most beautiful frescos in the country representing the Reamker version of the Ramayana painted in the late 19th century.
