The capital city of Germany, Berlin is one of 16 national states. It is seventh in the EU in terms of urban population size and is the biggest city in Germany. It was during the 13th century, when the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, that it was first documented. After the Second World War and until 1990, the Berlin Wall divided the city into East and West Berlin. Today, the city is a unified centre of politics, science, media and culture. Its economy mainly focusses on the service sectors and high-tech industries. There is quite a lot of uncertainty surrounding the origin of the name Berlin. It may mean “swamp” or possibly “Bear” and there is a bear in the city’s coat of arms.
