A Journey Aboard Silver Ray: Champagne & Sailaways

There’s a certain rhythm to life at sea that feels increasingly rare. Days soften around long lunches and slow mornings, evenings stretch gently into midnight conversations, and somehow, without noticing, the outside world begins to feel fade away. From the moment I stepped aboard Silversea’s Silver Ray in Ibiza, it became clear this voyage was designed less around schedules and more around atmosphere - creating space to slow down, settle in and simply enjoy the experience of being at sea.

Day One: Ibiza

Boarding in Ibiza felt refreshingly calm. Whilst my luggage was efficiently delivered to my suite, I headed straight to La Terrazza for lunch, where endlessly flowing champagne arrived almost instinctively from the ever-attentive servers.

The restaurant’s relaxed buffet-style setting made for the perfect first afternoon onboard, with Mediterranean dishes sitting alongside more comforting classics. A rich chicken and mushroom pie was my first unexpected favourite of the trip, enjoyed with a chilled glass of champagne whilst watching the marina gently drift by outside.

After lunch, I spent time exploring the ship and getting my bearings. What struck me immediately was the sense of space. With a maximum guest capacity of 728 passengers, everything about Silver Ray felt remarkably peaceful. Wide open decks, quiet lounge spaces and beautifully designed outdoor areas created countless opportunities to simply stop and enjoy the Mediterranean sun. Whether it was a shaded day bed, a lounger beside the pool or an oversized sofa overlooking the ocean, there was never any difficulty finding somewhere quiet to unwind with a drink in hand.

Back in my Superior Veranda Suite, the same feeling of understated luxury continued. The design felt contemporary yet calming, with soft neutral tones, warm lighting and floor-to-ceiling doors opening out onto a private terrace that quickly became my favourite place onboard.

Technology was seamlessly integrated throughout the suite, with a bedside tablet allowing complete control over lighting, temperature, entertainment and even direct communication with my butler for anything I may need throughout the voyage. Spacious wardrobes, a beautifully designed marble bathroom and thoughtful finishing touches made the suite feel more like a boutique hotel expertly floating through the Mediterranean.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent on the pool deck beneath the Ibizan sunshine. The atmosphere remained effortlessly relaxed, with attentive staff appearing moments after ordering to deliver ice-cold drinks directly to sun loungers. Hours seemed to disappear easily here, moving only between the pool, the sunshine and the occasional refreshing cocktail.

Before getting ready for the evening, I stopped by the Arts Café and picked up two freshly baked cookies to take back to my suite - a small indulgence that became a tradition for the rest of the trip.

As evening arrived, pre-dinner drinks at Dusk Bar provided the perfect start to the night. Positioned towards the aft of the ship, the atmosphere felt intimate and relaxed as a solo guitarist and singer performed whilst guests gathered with cocktails, watching Ibiza slowly soften into dusk.

After a brief stop at the S.A.L.T Bar, dinner was enjoyed at Atlantide. Spinach and corn croquettes were followed by an impeccably cooked filet mignon, whilst sugar-free profiteroles somehow managed to feel indulgent without becoming overly rich — the kind of thoughtful detail Silversea seemed to execute so well throughout the voyage.

Later that evening, the pool deck of Silver Ray transformed for a live flamenco performance featuring four performers from Barcelona. Beneath the open sky, surrounded by the glow of the ship reflected against the water, the performance completely captivated the audience and brought a vibrant energy to the evening.

The night ended at Panorama Lounge, where guests gathered for sail away as Ibiza slowly disappeared into the darkness behind us. At 11pm, the ship glided effortlessly away from the island, the moonlight stretching silver across the water as we began our overnight journey towards Palma de Mallorca.

Day Two: Palma de Mallorca

The following morning began gently, waking naturally to the subtle movement of the ship as Silver Ray slowly docked into Palma de Mallorca.

Still wrapped in the quietness of early morning, I made an iced coffee using the in-suite coffee machine, complete with milk and ice thoughtfully delivered to my suite the previous evening by my butler, Daniel. Sitting on my private terrace as Palma gradually came into view felt very peaceful - the city slowly revealing itself beneath soft morning cloud as sunlight began to break across the harbour.

Before disembarking, I took part in one of the ship’s complimentary cooking classes, offered daily in the S.A.L.T Lab. Hosted by Chef Peace, the relaxed session introduced us to several traditional Moroccan dishes, including chicken tagine, msemmen flatbread and zaalouk. In under an hour, we had not only learned the techniques behind each dish but were also able to sit together afterwards and enjoy the results of our efforts - a thoughtful experience that added another layer to life onboard beyond simply dining.

Returning to the ship later that afternoon from wandering around the beautiful sites of Palma, lunch was enjoyed at The Marquee, a relaxed outdoor dining venue perfect for smaller sharing plates. Pizzas, salads and lighter dishes arrived steadily alongside cold drinks and sea views before the remainder of the afternoon naturally drifted back towards the pool deck, where the Mediterranean sun and endlessly flowing champagne made it particularly easy to lose track of time.

Dinner that evening was once again enjoyed at La Terrazza, transformed beautifully into its Italian dining concept by night. Comforting plates of gnocchi and lasagne were followed by tiramisu and a final limoncello before returning to Panorama Lounge to sit outside and watch Palma slowly disappear into the evening as we sailed onwards through the Mediterranean.

Day Three: A Day at Sea

Sea days carry a completely different pace onboard Silver Ray. Without excursions or schedules to shape the day, time begins to feel a little irrelevant.

The morning started slowly with coffee on my balcony, watching nothing but endless shades of blue stretch towards the horizon. There’s something incredibly calming about being surrounded entirely by sea - a quiet stillness that encourages you to slow down without even realising it.

After another inevitable stop at the Arts Café for coffee and cookies, guests gathered on Deck 3 for a caviar and champagne reception ahead of Atlantide’s brunch. The atmosphere felt celebratory yet relaxed, with guests lingering between fresh sushi stations, seafood displays, pastries, cheeses, cured meats and made-to-order pasta dishes that turned brunch into a long an indulgent afternoon affair.

With glorious sunshine overhead and the Mediterranean stretching endlessly around us, the afternoon felt designed entirely for relaxation. Finding a comfortable sunbed with a freshly made traditional lemonade in hand was the only real plan for the day, watching the sea and sky blur together as we sailed steadily towards Gibraltar.

The final evening onboard Silver Ray was “Formal Optional” - allowing guests the freedom to dress elegantly for the occasion or remain comfortably smart casual, something Silversea balances particularly well. The atmosphere never felt rigid or formal, simply refined and relaxed.

Dinner that evening was enjoyed at S.A.L.T Kitchen, one of the ship’s most immersive dining experiences. We were warmly greeted by Peace, the chef who had hosted our cooking lesson the previous day, before being introduced to an impressive range of wines by the restaurant’s sommelier.

Designed to reflect the destinations guests are visiting throughout the voyage, S.A.L.T creates menus inspired by the regions surrounding the ship, allowing the culinary experience to continue long after leaving port.

The evening unfolded slowly through a series of beautifully presented dishes: Iberico ham, grilled asparagus with salsa verde, olive tapenade with jamón bruschetta and finally a rich saffron veal paella that perfectly captured the flavours of the Mediterranean.

With every restaurant included within the voyage fare, there was something very liberating about being able to experience so many different dining concepts throughout the journey without ever needing to think twice.

After dinner, we headed to the Venetian Lounge for an evening performance celebrating music from film and stage. The entertainment team had the audience completely captivated throughout, their performances bringing an energy to the final evening onboard.

One final drink followed at Dolce Vita Bar, where performers later mingled effortlessly with guests, continuing the sense of warmth and familiarity that had defined the voyage from the very beginning.

Eventually, suitcases quietly reappeared outside suite doors and thoughts turned towards disembarkation in Gibraltar the following morning. But even then, standing on deck surrounded by little more than moonlight and the sound of the sea, it was impossible not to wish for just one more night onboard Silver Ray.
