Salzburg things to do
Fortress Hohensalzburg
Start your tour of Salzburg with a visit to this spectacular hilltop fortress, which dates back to the 11th century. Hop on the Festungsbahn funicular railway up the hill and you can stroll through the atmospheric medieval complex, admiring the imitation night sky ceiling in the Golden Hall, and the eerie yet impressive puppets on display at the Marionette Museum.
The Sound of Music tour
Fans of this classic film can’t miss a visit to Salzburg’s key filming sites. Take a guided tour of the Mirabell Gardens and the Pegasus Fountain, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace, and Nonnberg Convent and find yourself transported to a world of music and romance. You can even enjoy a puppet performance of the film at the Marionette Theatre.
Salzburg Zoo
A fun-filled day out can be enjoyed at the Salzburg Zoo, which is situated within the Hellbrunn Palace parkland. Observe animals from every corner of the globe across 14 acres of dense green terrain. At certain times of day, you can even watch the animals being fed (while tucking into a tasty ice cream of your own, of course).
Hangar-7
Experience a different side of Salzburg at Hangar-7, a futuristic glass aircraft hangar containing a collection of airplanes owned by the Flying Bulls. Hangar-7 is also home to art exhibitions, the award-winning Restaurant Ikarus, and chic cafés and lounges. You don’t have to be an aviation enthusiast to appreciate the undeniable cool of Hangar-7.
Linzergasse Shopping Street
The Linzergasse is not just a picturesque place for a stroll, it’s also the perfect destination for some retail therapy. Browse the racks in the boutiques, pick up one-of-a-kind items in jewellery shops, and treat yourself at the chocolatiers. Finish up in Linzergasse Platzl, an open square lined with bars and cafés where you can relax with a cocktail.
