The César Manrique Foundation
To appreciate the legacy of Lanzarote’s most cherished artist and architect, you’ll want to pay a visit to the César Manrique Foundation in Tahíche. Situated on a lava coulee, the lower storey of this extraordinary building is housed entirely in volcanic bubbles. Manrique’s home for 20 years, it offers a fascinating window into the artist’s life and works.
The Cactus Garden
Developed under the guidance of César Manrique, this large cactus garden can be found in Guatiza on the site of a former quarry. Home to over 1,000 species of cactus and over 10,000 individual plants, this cleverly designed garden is laid out over steep terraces and houses green water pools, a restored windmill, and a café.
Cueva de los Verdes
This atmospheric cave system was formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, and was historically used by locals trying to avoid kidnap at the hands of pirate invaders. Today it is open to visitors, who can explore two kilometres of the illuminated caves, and enjoy live music at the 500-seat auditorium.
Surfing at Playa de Famara
Caleta de Famara is a bohemian beach town on Lanzarote’s northern coast, where César Manrique famously spent his childhood summers. Today it is a surfing hotspot, famed for its soft sandy beach, dramatic waves, and unbeatable views of the Famara massif. Come here to enjoy a day of water sports against a spectacular backdrop.
Timanfaya National Park
At the heart of this astonishing stretch of wilderness is an active volcano, Timanfaya, surrounded by a stunning, rust-coloured landscape of peaks and lava beds. Experience the strength of the geothermal heat by watching cooking demonstrations at El Diablo restaurant, where the food you will dine on is cooked by the heat of the earth.
