It's easy to see the allure of Mexico. Classic Caribbean beaches fringed with palm trees stretch along a vibrant coastline, cactus-filled deserts, lush jungles and mountains create unique adventures, and Mexican cities bring cosmopolitan comforts next to sprawling Mayan remains. With dolphin encounters, horse riding, indulgent spas and scuba diving, luxury holidays in Mexico have so much to offer.

If you are looking for 5-star resorts paired with the country’s rich ancient past, think Cancun. Located on the Yucatan Peninsula by the Caribbean Sea, Cancun has Mayan archaeological sites nearby, like the impressive ruins of El Rey and the enormous step pyramid, Chichen Itza. For the most relaxing holidays in Mexico, head to one of the many beaches and be greeted with white powdery sands and vivid blue waters. Under the sea, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving, you'll find colourful coral gardens and plenty of tropical fish.

To the south, the Riviera Maya is the vast coastline that begins at the port town of Puerto Morelos. It stretches all the way south past Tulum, where you'll find some amazing Mayan ruins, to the village of Punta Allen. Famed worldwide for tropical beaches, luxury resorts and fine dining, this region is also home to the stunning Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System.

At the tip of the southern Baja California Peninsula, you'll find Los Cabos. This dreamy place is an unmatched natural beauty with diverse landscapes. Expect mountains covered in greenery, fringed by deserts and rolling sand dunes. Here, you can discover quaint Mexican towns like San Jose del Cabo and relax on pristine beaches by the sapphire Sea of Cortez, dubbed "the world's aquarium" by conservationist and explorer Jacques Cousteau.

When To Visit

Being so large, Mexico's weather varies depending on the time of the year and region of the country. In Cancun and the Riviera Maya, expect beach-perfect temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius all year round, making them perfect for luxury holidays no matter what the season. Los Cabos experiences a similar but cooler climate throughout the year, with temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius from late November to March.

August to October is known as hurricane season, but Cancun and the Riviera Maya experience major issues once a decade at the most, so you'll be fine with travel insurance cover. The sun is usually at its strongest during these months, too.

Food & Drink

Fine dining and full flavours are an integral part of Mexican hospitality. On Mexico package holidays you’ll get to try menus that celebrate the local cuisine, as well as international specialities. Think Asian fusion cooking, classic French offerings, Japanese sushi, Mediterranean seafood and Italian pasta.

With fresh ingredients, a blend of cultures and imaginative flair, traditional Mexican cuisine is not only delicious, but it's also recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Be sure to sample that heritage and try Yucatan specialities like papadzules, a creamy tortillas dish, and the fish tacos of Los Cabos.

Passport & Visas

As with any holiday, it's good to carry some identification with you at all times and to keep a photocopy of your passport. You don't need a visa to enjoy holidays in Mexico, but you do need an immigration form - available when you arrive, or online in advance. Visit GOV.UK for more advice.
