The Castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein

Located opposite one another, these two fairy-tale castles rise above the green tips of a dense woodland against a backdrop of snow-capped mountain peaks and a vast shimmering lake. The two castles are different in size and structure and both are amongst the most beautiful in the world. It's certainly worth the drive from Munich to visit them.

The Stadel Museum

Chronicling artworks from the 14th century to today, the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt has a collection of over 3,000 paintings and over 10,000 drawings and prints. You'll also find a fantastic display of sculptures and photographs. Highlights of the museum include Botticelli's Portrait of a Young Woman, Rembrandt's The Blinding of Samson and Picasso's Portrait of Fernande Olivier.

The Alte Pinakothek Museum

Housed in a stunning Neo-Renaissance building, this art museum in Munich is one of the most important in the world. You'll find a vast collection of masterpieces from old masters and new with works from the likes of Durer, Kandinsky, Michelangelo, Monet, Murillo, Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian. The museum is also home to one of Van Gogh's iconic sunflower paintings.
