The Castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein
Located opposite one another, these two fairy-tale castles rise above the green tips of a dense woodland against a backdrop of snow-capped mountain peaks and a vast shimmering lake. The two castles are different in size and structure and both are amongst the most beautiful in the world. It's certainly worth the drive from Munich to visit them.
Planten un Blomen
Covering over 100 acres, Planten un Blomen is a beautifully manicured park in Hamburg. Visit lovely green pastures, discover a fantastic botanical garden with a tropical greenhouse and visit the largest Japanese Garden in Europe. You'll also find a romantic section of roses with over 300 different varieties and a magical lake that hosts daily water light-shows to music.
Museum Island
Explore one island with five leading museums at this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Berlin. At the Alte Nationalgalerie, enjoy world-famous German artworks and at the Altes Museum, artefacts from Classical antiquity. Wander the Byzantine collection at the Bode Museum, Egyptian relics at the Neues Museum and Islamic art at the Pergamonmuseum – all five have important works.
The Stadel Museum
Chronicling artworks from the 14th century to today, the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt has a collection of over 3,000 paintings and over 10,000 drawings and prints. You'll also find a fantastic display of sculptures and photographs. Highlights of the museum include Botticelli's Portrait of a Young Woman, Rembrandt's The Blinding of Samson and Picasso's Portrait of Fernande Olivier.
The Alte Pinakothek Museum
Housed in a stunning Neo-Renaissance building, this art museum in Munich is one of the most important in the world. You'll find a vast collection of masterpieces from old masters and new with works from the likes of Durer, Kandinsky, Michelangelo, Monet, Murillo, Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian. The museum is also home to one of Van Gogh's iconic sunflower paintings.
