Guide to Luxury Holidays in Rome

The capital of Italy, Rome is lovingly known as The Eternal City. Judging by the well-preserved historic sites, museums and galleries, it's hard to disagree with its nickname. Home to world famous attractions like the Colosseum and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, you'll find walking this city one of the most pleasurable things to do. Fine dining is also a speciality of Rome with some of the best restaurants in Italy. Enjoy a slice of la dolce vita and explore iconic sights like the ornate Trevi Fountain. Wander the 138 steps of the Spanish Steps towards the beautiful Trinita dei Monti Church. Or, take a detour and visit one of the many designer stores and local boutiques. The area around these steps has the highest concentration of stores in all of Rome. You can even visit two countries in one day by taking a trip to Vatican City. Stroll the Sistine Chapel, admire Michelangelo's renowned frescoes and search for his masterpiece, The Creation of Adam. Walk the halls of Saint Peter's Basilica and savour the lush Gardens of Vatican City. Delve into the past at the Vatican Museums, home to important classical and Renaissance artworks, and gaze in awe at the famous frescoes painted by Raphael in the Raphael Rooms.

With so many treasures to explore, Rome is a year-round destination. The most popular time for luxury travellers to visit the capital is in the summer from May to September. During this period, temperatures rise well above 20 degrees Celsius, with July and August being the hottest months peaking into the 30s. Spring and autumn are cooler and make ideal seasons to wander all of Rome's attractions. Winter months are mild with occasional rains. It's a quieter time which is perfect for exploring popular sites at a leisurely pace.
As with any holiday, it's a good idea to carry some identification with you at all times and to keep a photocopy of your passport. British passport holders don't need a visa to enter Italy. Visit GOV.UK for more advice on passports, visas and travel.
Enjoy world-class gastronomy in the heart of Italy. During your luxury hotel stay in Rome, you'll taste the finest Mediterranean cuisine and international fusion dishes. And what better way to drink in city views than with a fine wine or cocktail in hand? Rome has real foodie credentials, including Michelin-starred restaurants with panoramic views. But it does the simple stuff better, too. Kids (and indeed you) won't want to miss authentic gelato, Italy's thicker, tastier, creamier version of ice cream. And there's always Roman pizza...
