In a very small nutshell, Rotorua is in a caldera (not a crater), on Lake Rotorua and reeks of sulphur, the price you pay for underground hot springs. This does not deter visitors in the slightest and nor is it likely to deter you; spectacles such as Pohutu Geyser which spouts up to 30m several times a day, mud pools and thermal reserves plus Maori cultural shows (probably the best in the country). For a breath of much fresher air Lake Taupo is hard to beat, a Hukafalls Jet Boat ride will take your breath away with awesome speed and precision and it is worth stealing yourself to experience it as the views along the way are stunning. In the Bay of Plenty, the focal point, Mount Maunganui has been recognised by TripAdvisor as having the best Kiwi beach for the 3rd year running – it is one of many but if you are travelling with children this one is particularly well-serviced and is suitable for swimmers and surfers.
