Situated at the southern tip of the North Island, Wellington wraps itself around its expansive harbour, affording you remarkable views no matter which end of the city you are in. Known as the cultural capital of New Zealand, it is here where you can find some of the country's most important museums and galleries, like the Te Papa Museum, the City Gallery, and the Wellington Museum of City & Sea. Take the delightful cable car from downtown up to the panoramic Kelburn Lookout and the nearby Botanic Gardens. Then head back down and slide by the "Beehive", the city's most iconic building, and home to the Prime Minister's offices. Afterwards, shop in the trendy boutiques of downtown, then spend the evening exploring the excellent bars and restaurants along the lovely waterfront. For the best view of the city, go to Mount Victoria, in Miramar, a neighbourhood that also boasts the celebrated Weta Workshop, a top effects company that helped put "Wellywood" on the map. Outside of Wellington, to the east, you'll find trekking opportunities in the Aorangi and Rimutaka Forest Parks, and lake houses along the vast waters of Wairarapa. If you can, hop on a ferry to the South Island, and see the astonishing Abel Tasman National Park, the glorious wineries of Marlborough, and the cute town of Nelson.
