Explore the Lisbon Coast, an exceptional area of resorts and beaches stretching west from the Portuguese capital. The jewel in the region's crown is Cascais, from where you can head north and explore the remote beaches and forested peaks of Sintra. Luxury Lisbon Coast holidays promise 5-star hotels, beaches, wilderness, and easy access to the capital.

Scenic landscapes and architecture, vibrant nightlife, and excellent historic attractions – there’s no denying Lisbon ticks every box as a European capital. And what makes the city truly exceptional as a holiday destination is how close it is to world-class seaside resorts and beautiful stretches of beach. The most desirable resort town on the Lisbon Coast is Cascais, just 40 minutes from the capital on the train. This picturesque former fishing village was once the favoured holiday spot for the Portuguese royal family.

Beyond the Cascais waterfront, which is lined with sandy beaches, historic buildings, and a chic marina, you’ll find a charming old town bursting with boutiques, restaurants, and cocktail bars. In neighbouring Estoril, the vibe is more laid-back but the beaches and scenery are just as delightful. A must-see here is the casino, the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel.

Stay near Cascais and you can explore the glorious beaches and sleepy villages of the Lisbon Coast at your leisure. Highlights include the mile-long Carcavelos Beach, the fantastic stretches of sand at Guincho (a watersports hotspot), and the gorgeous mountain slopes of Sintra, which are dotted with palaces and gardens. Hike, swim, shop, golf, dine, or simply sit at a seaside terrace watching the sun set over the Atlantic – the Lisbon Coast truly has it all.

When To Visit

The Lisbon Coast is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year but if you’re seeking the ultimate beach holiday, aim for the summer months. Between June and September the weather is hot and dry, with temperatures often peaking in the high twenties.

If you’re planning a walking, golfing or sightseeing holiday, spring or autumn can be good times to visit, as the cooler temperatures allow for more energetic activities. Temperatures remain mild throughout the winter, though, so the Lisbon Coast is an all-year delight.

Food & Drink

Book into a luxury beach resort on the Lisbon Coast and you’ll experience a variety of fantastic dining experiences. Our 5-star hotels here serve up everything from refined plates of contemporary Portuguese cooking and fresh seafood platters, to casual poolside bites.

Traditional Portuguese fare can be sampled in the local tascas. Classic dishes include bacalhau à brás (salted cod with potatoes, onions and scrambled egg), arroz de marisco (seafood rice) and the iconic Lisbon pastel de nata (custard tart). Of course, you’ll also want to sample the local port!
