Izmir
Turkey's third most populated city, Izmir presents a wealth of culture and history dating back many thousands of years. Its past saw it fall to both Ottoman and Roman rule, leaving behind a fascinating blend of architecture, like the Kadifekale hill citadel. For an unrivalled view over the city, climb up the Asanor tower and enjoy sweeping views.
Ephesus
After more than 150 years of excavation, Ephesus is Europe's most complete classical metropolis, and 80% of the city has yet to be recovered or renovated. The size, significance, and stock of this city, which was once home to 250,000 people, is epitomised by the Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Gümüşlük
Escape the Aegean Coast's more popular towns for the authentic and unassuming Gümüşlük. After going for a swim in its deep-blue waters, head to one of the simple yet stylish restaurants and cafes on the beach for some traditional Turkish cuisine. Laid-back in every sense of the word, Gümüşlük is refreshingly relaxed.
Pirlanta Beach
Translating to 'brilliant' or 'diamond', Pirlanta lives up to its reputation, thanks to its crystal-clear water and impeccable white sand. The sea is warmer here than nearby alternatives such as Altınkum, and shallow enough to sit in and read a book without interruption from waves. Snorkelling is also popular because of the colourful local marine life.
Aphrodisias
Dating back to the 1st and 2nd century AD, the city of Aphrodite, goddess of love, is one of Turkey's best-preserved archaeological sites. Less crowded than Ephesus but equally fascinating, excavations have concluded that Aphrodisias was once a thriving sculpture centre. In fact, statues with signatures of local artists have appeared as far away as Greece and Italy.
