Abu Dhabi and the Maldives: The Ultimate Escape

Some luxury holiday combinations just make sense. Abu Dhabi and the Maldives is one of them. Begin in Abu Dhabi

For the first chapter of your Abu Dhabi and the Maldives holiday, we’d recommend starting with three or four nights at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. Sitting directly on the Arabian Gulf, with 1.3km of private beach and an enviable position for exploring the city, it gives you the grand arrival this itinerary deserves.

There’s something fun about staying somewhere that genuinely feels like a palace. Rooms and suites range from elegant spaces with garden, city or sea views to much more expansive suites with private terraces, hot tubs and even 24-hour butler service. And if you enjoy having a little more included during your stay, the Emirates Palace Club accommodation comes with Champagne breakfasts, afternoon teas and evening canapés.

For a special occasion, or because this is the sort of trip where you might as well lean into it, we’d look at the higher suite categories. The additional space and privacy can make a real difference, particularly for longer stays.

And then there’s the food. With 12 dining venues, you could happily stay within the resort for several evenings, including Michelin-starred Talea by Antonio Guida and Hakkasan. We’d still recommend making time to explore Abu Dhabi beyond the hotel, though. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi are standouts, while Yas Island showcases a completely different side of the emirate altogether with its theme parks.

After a day sightseeing, the 1,500sqm spa is an excellent excuse to slow the pace again, with a Moroccan-inspired hammam, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, heated marble and an ice cave.

Then Disappear to the Maldives

This is where an Abu Dhabi and the Maldives trip changes gear entirely.

After the scale and spectacle of the Middle East, Huvafen Fushi feels incredibly intimate, like the isle was waiting just for you. Set in the North Malé Atoll, the private island is reached in around 30 minutes by a speedboat from Velana International Airport, so there’s no lengthy seaplane journey standing between you and that first dip in the lagoon.

There are just 46 bungalows and pavilions here, and each - very enticingly - comes with its own plunge pool. We’d choose between beachfront and overwater accommodation based on how you imagine spending your days: beachfront for that classic Robinson Crusoe feeling, or overwater if stepping straight from your deck into the lagoon sounds like your idea of heaven. 

The Ocean Bungalow with Pool is particularly popular with our clients, with three-tiered decks, direct lagoon access and a private infinity pool. For families or groups travelling together, the larger beach residences provide considerably more space without losing that sense of privacy, as the island’s vegetation is well established.

One of the real draws here is the house reef, sitting around 25 metres from shore. It means you can snorkel straight from the island rather than having to arrange a boat trip every time you fancy seeing what’s waiting for you beneath the surface. Guided snorkelling and PADI-certified diving are also available for those who want to venture further.

Then there’s the spa – which is quite literally beneath the water. Huvafen Fushi is home to the world’s first underwater spa, where treatments take place surrounded by views and residents of the reef. Dining can be equally memorable, from sandbank lunches and private dinners to Latitude 4° Underwater, the island’s signature underwater dining experience.

The Maldives is the exhale afterwards: swimming, snorkelling, underwater spa treatments, long lunches and taking in the sunset from your own private deck.

We’d generally recommend three or four nights in Abu Dhabi followed by four to seven nights in the Maldives. Our experts have found that that gives you enough time to experience the city without feeling rushed, before settling into island mode for the second half of the trip.
