Du Fu Thatched Cottage

To get a glimpse of a bygone era, make for Huanhuaxi Park. This pretty green space houses a heritage site, which pays tribute to the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu. Built in the 16th-century and renovated three centuries later, these beautiful historic buildings house a library, living area and exhibition hall decorated with intricate carvings and murals.

Mount Qingcheng

You'll find this remarkable site on the western outskirts of the Chengdu region. The mist-draped Mount Qingcheng is considered to be one of the birthplaces of Taoism and houses some impressive buildings including Jianfu Palace and Tianshi Cave temple. Soak up the atmosphere by exploring these quiet tree-shaded buildings and enjoying a scenic boat ride across Yuecheng Lake.

Tour the Teahouses

Chengdu is famous for its teahouses. Rather than limit yourself to just one or two, visit several during your stay. Here, you can soak up the traditional atmosphere and learn the Sichuan art of relaxing with a tasty brew. Two of the most iconic teahouses are He Ming, located in People’s Park, and Shufengya Yun.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

This conservation facility protects the endangered giant panda by encouraging breeding in captivity. Visitors can observe the pandas from a short distance and watch them eat, drink and play. In autumn and winter, you may even catch a glimpse of newborn cubs. The manicured grounds are also home to red pandas, peacocks and butterflies.

These ancient alleyways – known locally as Kuan Xiangzi and Zhai Xiangzi – usher you into a forgotten era, giving you a taste of Chengdu life as it once was. Visit old houses and teahouses, watch puppet shows and shadow plays, and snap photos of the traditional decoration. This is also a great place to pick up souvenirs.
